Am I ready to start a yoga class?

Most people in moderately good condition are capable of starting a yoga practice, and it is always recommended you check with your physician before beginning a new exercise routine. Yoga is tremendously helpful in alleviating many aches and pains and reducing stress. If you are unsure about your physical condition, or if you have been advised to begin practicing yoga from a doctor’s recommendation, we ask you call us to discuss which class is right for you. Ocean Yoga welcomes all new students interested in improving their wellness and as with most new endeavors- starting at the beginning is recommended…so check our schedule or call us!

What is Hatha Yoga?

Hatha Yoga describes any of the physical practices of yoga. There are actually eight “limbs” or eight “paths” of the Yoga Practice and Hatha is just one of them. There are many styles of Hatha Yoga to choose. At Ocean Yoga, we teach Anusara, Kripalu, Vinyasa or Flow, Jivimukti, Yoga for Total Wellness and various Workshops. The term “Hatha yoga” can be used interchangeably with “yoga.”

What should I wear to prepare for a yoga class?

The right clothes can help you be more comfortable in your Yoga class. Wear comfortable, natural clothing that allows you to move freely, especially in forward bending. Dress in layers. You will become warm during practice, but you will want to cover up during final relaxation pose. Yoga is practiced with bare feet.

I have noticed I am not as strong or flexible as used to be when I was younger, and my children suggest I take yoga. Is there a class for someone like me? What are the benefits of yoga for me?

We recognize that are students vary greatly in their level of fitness and health, that is why we offer yoga classes that can benefit everyone, especially those who have never done yoga in their lives! Our class, "Yoga for Total Wellness" is a relaxing yoga class designed to help students handle the changes in their strength, flexibility and balance associated with injury, age or stress. Through breathing exercises, stretching and relaxation techniques, students developed healthy posture with improved balance, mobility of joints and circulation. You’re children are right!

What type of equipment do I need to bring to class?

Ocean Yoga has many props including Yoga mats that you can use. However, purchasing your own mat is a good idea. They are very inexpensive, less than $20 at most discount stores. Bringing a towel to class is a good idea also.

What should I do to prepare for Yoga class?

Yoga is best practiced on an empty stomach, so we recommend that you avoid heavy food approximately 2 hours prior to you session, and if possible limit caffeine intake. It is a good idea to drink water, both before and after your practice in order to keep your body well hydrated. Try to arrive to class at least fifteen minutes early, so that you are not rushed and can relax before class starts. Also, please remember to turn your cell phone off before entering class. Some people are sensitive to perfumes, so please refrain from wearing fragrances to class.

Which Yoga classes are right for me?

If you are a Beginner to Yoga, we suggest that you take a Beginning Workshop or Level 1 Anusara Inspired Yoga or Gentle Flow classes. The Level 1 classes will familiarize you with the Yoga postures and Yogic breathing and help you become comfortable with the practice, The Level 2 Anusara, Flow and Jivamukti classes are recommended for those who have had at least 6 months Yoga experience. If you have been practicing elsewhere or at home for awhile are not sure which class is appropriate for you, please ask the teacher if he or she thinks you are ready to advance to the next level ensuring your experience is the best!
